2007-2008 Cabinet Meeting Minutes
DISTRICT 2-T2 CABINET MEETING October 20, 2007 South Plains Lanes Lubbock, Texas
Call to Order, Welcome and Introductions The Cabinet meeting of the Lions of District 2-T2 was called to order at 9.15 am on Saturday, October 20, 2007 by DG Terrell Thompson.
Those in attendance were DG Terrell Thompson, VDG Jene Steakley, Secretary Peg White, IPDG Tom White and Lions Dave Freriks, Don Smith, Don Wellendorf, Cheyan Jackson, Troy Coon, Jim Dulin, Jim Stratton, Jean Anne Stratton, Don Eversole, Mildred Parker, Fredda Buckner, Leon Howard, Kip Culp, Jake Bentley, Van Wilson, Shirley Ward, Jan Gravett, Dan Warrick, Barbara Dickerson, P.A. Willmon, Marvin Stewart, Dan Seale, Karen Jackson, Ted Boyd, Ray Copeland, Danny Leake, Bob Ruiz, Bub McIver, Raleigh Hudzietz, Joe Freeman, CCE Bernie Gradel, PDG Charles Shannon, PID Marshall Cooper, PDG Duane Howell, PDG Carmon McCain, PDG Dan Pope, PDG Gary Linker.
The Invocation was led by Lion Jake Bentley. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Troy Coon. DG Terrell Thompson introduced our District Queen Robyn Rose. He also recognized PDG Charles Shannon for bringing in over 200 new members. Lion Bob Ruiz was given the Governor’s Appreciation Medal for his work as District Photographer. VDG Jene Steakley introduced the PDG’s in attendance and the District Governor.
Approval of Minutes of July 21, 2007 Cabinet Meeting Minutes of the previous meeting were made available. The reading of the minutes from the previous Cabinet meeting was dispensed by motion from IPDG Tom White and seconded by Dave Freriks. Motion to approve the minutes was made by IPDG Tom White and seconded by Jake Bentley. Motion passed.
Report of Treasurers District Treasurer Howard Darwin was out of town so Cabinet Secretary Peg White gave his report. Finances were in good standing with total liabilities and equity at $13,890.88. The income balance for July 1 – Oct. 18, 2007 was $5,326.13 Moved by Joe Freeman and seconded by Fredda Buckner that these reports be accepted. Motion passed. In a later report, PDG Duane Howell reported that money had been disbursed from the Scholarship Funds. It was decided that an internal review rather than an outside auditor would be used for all accounts. It was moved by Joe Freeman and seconded by Raleigh Hudzietz to authorize PID Marshall Cooper to take care of the banking needs of the new Eyeglass Recycling Center.
New Business
District Governor Terrell Thompson gave us a review of the clubs with a 90 day past due balance according to International records. He stressed that all clubs know that International will pull the charters of clubs with long term past due balances.
At this point, DG Terrell Thompson paused the meeting for all to play a game of bowling. Bub McIver won the Poker Hand. High Game Score was won by Cabinet Secretary Peg White with a 146 (DG Terrell bowled a 147 but declined to win his own Tournament). Tailtwister Barbara Dickerson then gave prizes for her “bowl” games. Winners were Dan Warrick, Danny Leake, Jean Anne Stratton, Jim Stratton, and Queen Robyn Rose.
DG Terrell Thompson gave an update on the District Fundraiser. There has not been the groundswell of support that he wanted but he is hoping to generate enthusiasm. If all the tickets are not sold by Mid-Winter then we will continue until April.
Zone Reports
Zone 1A – Peg White Internet meeting after calling all presidents and secretaries of her zone. All clubs doing well and had successful fundraisers. Whiteface will send outstanding dues.
Zone 1B – Jake Bentley Conference call with 5 clubs participating. Good response from all clubs except Ransom Canyon/Roosevelt.
Zone 2A – Raleigh Hudzietz Phone meeting with good response.
Zone 2B – Bub McIver Reported that Floydada wants to bring in new younger members and is trying to develop a public relations program. Olton is good overall, Plainview is growing, and Roaring Springs is good overall with outstanding programs
Zone 3A – Jim Dulin Phone meeting. Lorenzo is comprised mostly of farmers and they will send in reports when the cotton is in.
Lubbock Christian University Lions Club will hold its Charter Night on November 3 at the Green Lawn Church of Christ. PDG Dan Pope encouraged everyone to attend. Cost is $11 per person. Lubbock Redbud is donating a banner and gavel, Lubbock South Plains is making a donation and it is hoped that other clubs will give gifts.
Zone 3B – Fredda Buckner Jayton club down to 4 members, and Post down to 2. Roby has lost 4 members. Rotan, Snyder, Dickens and Petersburg stable.
Zone 3C – Kip Culp Hale Center, Cotton Center, Lamesa Evening and Shallowater all doing well.
New Business Danny Leake suggested that there is a need for training for secretaries of the clubs. Some clubs have new secretaries this year and they are unaware of their responsibilies.
PID Marshall Cooper reported that the first training session for the Eyeglass Recycling Center will be November 10, 2007 at 9 am. Everyone is invited at Baylor and North University, 302 N. University. The trainers are coming to Lubbock to give more people an opportunity to be instructed.
Lion Joe Freeman turned in the 100-200% for Lubbock Redbud.
Committee Reports
DG Terrell reported that the MERL team would be meeting soon. Mary Beth Harris has been recovering from surgery. The focus right now will be on extension. Van Wilson said he had been doing outreach with clubs in other parts of the state to get as many ideas as he can about what works and what doesn’t so he will give us ideas for clubs with retention issues.
Dan Warrick gave a report on the Constitution changes. They are in Article V, Sec. C: Regions and Zones and Article VI, Section B(2).
Cheyan Jackson gave the report on the Mid-Winter meeting. It will be Jan. 26, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock. The Queen’s Contest will be held and the Guest Speaker will be PDG Bev Stebbins from Arlington. No training is planned. There will be a banquet that night. Jan. 18th is the deadline for Queen’s contestants. The Queen can be a freshman through junior in school.
P.A. Willmon has booked the Holiday Inn Express and the Best Western Hotel in Levelland for the District Convention on April 19, 2008. The Convention activities will be held at South Plains College and it will be a 3 meal event. We will be voting for an International Director candidate also. DG Terrell is hoping to get Floydada Lions Club to host the Golf Tournament on April 12.
Peg White reported that the Peace Poster contest in Lubbock is in full swing with several schools participating. Next year, any area towns need to contact her by May 1st to request a contest in their town so that she can get packets from International.
Danny Leake talked about the Drug Awareness, Diabetes Awareness and Outstanding Youth Contests. He would like for our District to have participants go to State in all of these events. PDG Duane Howell reminded us that the sponsoring club will need to help subsidize the cost for any students going to State as there is not enough money budgeted.
Leon Howard gave a report on Texas Boys Ranch. The new Cottage 4 is at capacity and they are hoping to get a $50,000 grant for landscaping, sprinklers and a carport. The Board has authorized the purchase of 120 acres to the north of the campus. The Telethon raised $195,000 which is 20% of the annual budget. He would like more district participation.
Shirley Ward reported that Girlstown has 48 girls, many of whom participated in the Rodeo and the seminar with Miss Texas. She stressed that even with with help of the Cal Farley organization, Girlstown really needs the help of District 2-T2 for the girls’ 4H animals, clothes, birthdays, Christmas, cosmetics and incidentals. They are having a Harvest Festival on October 27. Lion Shirley is available to give a program to any Lions Club and she can be reached at 806.894.3922. It was moved by Jake Bentley and seconded by IPDG Tom White that we continue to include Girlstown and one of the District Charities.
PDG Gary Linker of Texas Lions Foundation reported that we have great representation and funding is going well. He believes that you cannot be too young or old to give or get this award.

Jim Stratton has been asked to give only one Leader Dog program and welcomes any others.
Jean Anne Stratton handed out awards to Lubbock, Lubbock Redbud, Lubbock Hub, Lubbock South Plains, Lubbock Lip Lipscomb and Ropesville Lions Clubs for demonstrating concern and compassion for the Blind. Jean Anne is available to give programs. Please call for her schedule.
Peg White reported that she has raised $1800 in advertising for the Newsletter. Printing costs are $189 per issue and postage is $69. At this rate, she suggested that we do an October-November issue, December-January, February-March, and April-May with no June issue.
DG Terrell praised the great job Dave Freriks has done on scheduling his governor visits. The schedule is in the Windmill.
Don Wellendorf gave the Long Range Planning Committee report. It is suggested that a procedures manual be adopted, that they consider putting the Lions office at the Texas Lions Camp and that they need an executive secretary who could learn Pat’s job functions. Also, they are trying to get the International Convention in Dallas in 2017.
The Texas Lions Leadership Forum will be in Austin, March 7,8, 2008.
Karen Jackson reported that the Youth Exchange went very smoothly and reminded everyone that the students will be coming next year – the third week in July - please have your clubs get sponsors to house the students.
Don Smith of the Texas Lions Camp is coordinating visits and wants to send letters to the delinquent clubs who have not sent their money. Ted Boyd has given 5 programs and has 4 more scheduled.
Don Eversole gave a report on the Hearing Bank – there were not many applications at the October meeting. He has an 8-minute video available for any group.
PDG Dan Pope reported that the Great Plains Eye Bank is going well and Jan Gravitt is available to give programs. She can be reached at 806.894.4675.
Jim Dulin moved and Joe Freeman seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motion passed.
The meeting was adjourned at 12 noon.
